Be gracious.

In winning. In defeat.

Be gracious.

After a competition, sometimes it’s hard to be either of those.

When you’ve worked hard and lost; sometimes the last thing you want to do is congratulate the winner.

Or, when you’ve worked hard for the win; sometimes you don’t want to be humble about it.

Being a “sport” means being gracious to your fellow runner, win or lose. This creates friendly competition, in a welcoming environment that all athletes can thrive in. That doesn’t mean we can’t we fierce competitors. It means that at the end, our opponents are not our enemies, but those who will push us to better ourselves.

So, shake hands, thank each other for some great competition, and get back to work. You never know what might happen when you meet on the race course again.
